Weller, G. R. Harp, R. F. C. Farrow, A. Cebollada, and J. Sticht IBM Almaden Research Center, 650 Harry Road, San Jose, California 95120-6099 Biosym Technologies Inc., 9685 Scranton Road, San Diego, California 92121 Received 16 December 1993 Anisotropy of the energy dependent polar magneto-optical Kerr effect as a function of the angle between the magnetization and crystallographic axes is reported. The results are obtained on epitaxially oriented opaque films of hcp Co grown in two different crystallographic orientations by molecular beam epitaxy. Respective Kerr spectra of fcc Co films are found to be insensitive to the magnetization direction. This Kerr anisotropy is correlated with the presence of strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the hcp phase of Co. A perturbation theory treatment of the spin orbit coupline correctly predicts the order of magnitude of this new effect. ©1994 The American Physical Society URL: http://link.aps.org/abstract/PRL/v72/p2097 DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.72.2097 PACS: 78.20.Ls, 71.70.Ej, 73.61.At, 75.50.Cc ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Add to article collection] View Page Images or PDF (779 kB) [ Previous article | Next article | Issue 13 contents ] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ References (Reference links marked with [dot] may require a separate subscription.) 1. Rutherford backscattering experiments indicated a surface Co oxide layer of sim50 AA,in all presently discussed films. Experiments on films protected with sim20 AA, thick Pt cap layers showed an overall reduced Kerr effect, but no changes in the shape of the spectra. 13. H. Brooks, Phys. Rev. 58, 909 (1940); G. C.
