Folkerts The total energy of an antiferromagnetically coupled multilayer system is considered as a function of anisotropy symmetry and direction of an applied field. The possible relative orientations of the magnetizations in adjancent layers are expressed in magnetic phase diagrams. From these diagrams the possible magnetoresistance curves in Fe/Cr and similar systems can be derived. Using the diagrams the magnitude of the coupling can be derived easily from the experimental magnetoresistance curves.
